Description

Cover dated April 1986.

Like many people from my generation, my first exposure to Firestar was the “Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends” cartoon. That show made multiple references to her being a member of the X-men, and given that I had never read a comic book at that point, I had no reason to question it. Once I started reading X-Men comics a few years later, I was surprised to find no mention of her ever being a member of the team. It was as if the cartoon had lied to me!

Firestar’s 1985 miniseries was her proper introduction to Marvel Comics after an appearance in Uncanny X-Men #193. I guess this puts Firestar in the company of Harley Quinn and, um, Video-Man, as characters who started in animation and then leaped into the pages.

All of the foregoing being said, this page doesn’t even feature the title character. It’s the X-Men and the New Mutants out of costume, deciding it would be fun for Xavier’s younger students to attend a dance being held at a school run by one of their greatest enemies (at the time), the White Queen. That never made much sense to me, but I love this page. It’s Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Professor X, Sunspot, Cannonball and Magik, as depicted by the very talented Mary Wilshire, who I wish had done far more in the comic book industry than she did given her wonderful work.

I'm with you, Michael. I adored that animated series and then when I began collecting comics a year later, I continually wondered "Where the hell is Firestar? How come nobody even says her name, either here in the X-Men comic or in any of Spidey's comics?!?! Likewise with the whole "competing private schools" angle where the students would get together once per year for a dance party, in between fighting each other to the death during the other 364 days of every year. Claremont's writing was already dropping off the cliff in my eyes by this point in time though, so I just chalked it up to that. Fun page!

I'm waiting for the Ms. Lion birth page to show up any day now.  A very stately page with some elegant character work of these X-Men and New Mutants.  All X-Men related titles sold like crazy and had that excitement because there was only one core title and there were 3-4 more weeks every month for readers to come back and stay in this ecosystem.  When they began putting reference captions in the main title for these events, we knew X-Men was a complete line wide story.

I watched Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends as a tike too, but I had no idea that they referenced Firestar to be on the X-Men. Not even Ice Man lol. I associate Ice Man more with the X-Men. I didn't even know Firestar appeared in the comics until I was much, much older. Anyhow, this is a good page and I'm glad you picked it up. How else are you going to get a mid-80s X-Men page with PUNK STORM!!!!! at an affordable price? This one surely tempted me.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised at what they were asking for this, and consider myself lucky in large part because of what you mentioned - it's got Storm with a mohawk!  If I hadn't gotten my order in immediately after getting the email, I am sure it would have gone to someone else.

Really nice page.  Fun to see everyone all excited to attend a dance hosted by an arch enemy, despite Professor X's words of caution.  "I don't care, I just wanna dance with a pretty girl!" says Roberto. "Ah, let the kids get out and have some fun" says Storm. "I'll be the chaperone!" says Colossus.  "This is stupid" says grumpy ol' Wolverine.  Haha!  Well, SOMEONE has to be the voice of reason.  Great get.
