Description

I commissioned Gil Kane to do a Flash Gordon and Dale Arden drawing in 1999, which was delivered shortly before he passed away in January, 2000.

For several years, I was considering having an inker lightbox and ink the art, but never got around to it. By sheer coincidence, Dan Adkins, one of my favorite inkers over Kane, found a scan I had posted and created an inked version which he listed on eBay in 2007. I was fortunate to be able to win it at a bargain price to go along with the original pencil version.

There's some justifiable controversy over Adkins creating and selling inked versions of pencil art he found online -- in some cases because he created multiple versions of drawings (mainly over Jack Kirby) and also because he signed the original artists name along with his own. The back of this art clearly states that it's not original pencils, but these pieces sometimes do show up for sale without this being clearly stated.

Nice Kane design of anatomy to have each balance the other. Adkins understood this and inked accordingly to great success.
