Description

Ok, as much as I keep ranting about how much I love and prioritize storytelling first and foremost and lament about modern pinup-y covers as opposed to those of old that were telling a story in line with the content of the book, prompting you to open it, I can be guilty of buying the pinup-y ones from time-to-time myself.

To my credit, it's drawn by one of the VERY BEST modern artists working in comics. And it was DIRT cheap, even by pre-pandemic standards.

It's the Cage variant cover to New Avengers 1, the second volume by Bendis. I've written again and again that I consider Briand M. Bendis to be responsible for much of the state of the Modern Marvel Universe (Hi Jason!). He made a franchise out of the Avengers. He modernized/reintroduced all the cool B and C listers heroes of the 80s (of the Marvel Marching confusion poster fame), including Luke Cage & Iron First (to the point that they received their own TV shows). And Miles Morales & Jessica Jones of course.

So owning a (first issue) cover from that run by probably the best artist to serve under his writing is quite pleasant.

I'll be the first to admit that Stuart drew him in a fairly static way (as he did for all those variants) but I really don't mind as he looks badass for one (even without the silk shirt and/or tiara) and second, going back to that 80s zeitgeist I really get an Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe vibe from his pose, one of the best things to happen to us 80s reading comics kids. So yes, I can also be guilty of getting touched by nostalgia ^^

PLUS! It features the first historical game changer appearance of Cage's not so phallic chain! On a cover no less! I'm sure it must be worth quite a few zeroes after the first number at resale. Just you watch till it makes its first appearance on the TV or movie screen before getting its own Disney + TV show and you know I'll have to send it off to the next Heritage pwestige auction ;p

This one if for you Ruben, as I know how MUCH you care about the character.

This is part 4 of my 2022 CAF birthday celebration.

As someone who loves the pinup-y stuff, I can't see much wrong with this piece.  Even with the lackof background, it's still a stunning piece.  Maybe even more so, as your eyes focus solely on the figure.  If you ever feel too guilty for compromising your collecting philosophy, I will be happy to take this off your hands.

Could you imagine the protests you would get if you wrote like those cheesy 70s caricatures, these days? You have? Call the thought police. The politically correct, humorless brigade, are on the way. They will kick in your door and then kick you. The bodycam footage will mysteriously disappear if you press charges. Long live the land of the free.

I see you are a fan of David Simon's work, Peter ;)

BUT I won't tolerate that kind of discrimination on my gallery, gents (which wouldn't have posed a problem when the Thing spoke like that under Stan Lee's pen).

So I'm a' go all cancel cultchure on y'all fools!

Whoo!  The updates are coming fast and furious now, as we close in on the big day!  And what a beauty this is... I had no idea you had this piece and I'm overjoyed to see it here.  Your Immonen room is one of my favorites of your amazing CAF gallery, and I'm happy to know this will be waiting for me there on the occasions I pop by for a visit. :)

And are you sitting down?  I am in complete agreement with you about the impact BMB had on the House of Ideas (no, really!) and, by extension, pop culture as a whole now.  I think this story arc of 'New Avengers' (starting with vol. 2, #1) was when the team of Bendis, Immonen, and von Grawbadger were at the peak of their not-inconsiderable powers; mainstream comics storytelling at its finest.  Gorgeous cover - Cage looks as awesome and formidable as you'd ever hope for him to be - from one of my favorite runs in mainstream comics, ever.

Knowing how fond he is for holidays, I think Cage himself would put it best by saying, "Sweet Birthday!"  HUGE congrats, Fred!

A really memorable run by Bendis and Immonen. Check my gallery if you want to see the Thing cover for this issue ;)

Of course you have to wait for someone who wants a rather droopy looking phallic chain. Lol. Its a really nice cover.

Very nice how delicately the chain dangles until its time comes.  The smoothness of the Immonen and Von Grawbadger strokes work to expouse the tension in the figurework that could explode in any moment!  It pulsates with a furious energy, but the pose is flexible enough not to appear stiff.

(Lol, Marcus! I see what you did there) Who you callin' a beefcake, fool? Sweet Chrissmas, I'll knock your ass inta next week! Sorry, I had to get in on the fun. Man, that image is perfect. It's like when an artist draws a perfect circle, but it most certainly is not. The effort even put into that chain is really impressive. Great cover. Congrats!

Oh yes, great shot of Cage.  I wondered if this art was out there. I actually had Immonen sign this variant comic at a con once.  Got the no nonsense contemporary look but with some throwback feel with the chain.  Congrats!
