DescriptionMs. Tree Quarterly #6 p16 (1991) Terry Beaty (Writer: Max Allan Collins) Semi-SplashSo maybe you were expecting something more with my 'full figure' comment ... but this is classic Ms Tree in her apropos trench coat. Ms Tree was a gem of the 80's independents and was unique at the time as she was a hard-boiled detective in the gritty noir classic tradition ... but was a woman! Back then the idea of a woman in this role was unique and ground-breaking. Her run began at Eclipse but soon switched over to Renegade Press for many years. Despite heavily promoting the independents at our store we could never seem to get a big following for the series but loyally ordered every issue to be sure it was available for potential readers. I was happy to win this semi-splash page from Russ Cochran auctions (and it feels good supporting the family as they keep his tradition going after all Russ did for our hobby). The fact that it was a semi-splash caught my eye and I thought that unusual as I very much remember a small panel layout for the stories, but I now realize that although that was the case for earlier stories this page is from the Quarterly series, which to my total surprise, was printed by DC Comics. However, given I was just married a few months when it was released and had stepped back from managing the comic store and was distracting from our hobby by my beautiful bride, I forgive myself for not noticing. Page is signed by writer Max Allan Collins and is in excellent condition. Social/Sharing |

I picked up this series off of eBay in the early 2000s, and it made me wish I had supported the book when it was originally on the stands. Beatty's art was perfect for Collins' excellent stories.

Looks so neat and precise! This artwork comes across like it still was indie with how it was made for b&w presentation. Very slick figures and facial expressions. The background with stone walls and wrought iron gate pattern is very much of its day.
