Description

I've become a big fan of Rod Ruth's art, thanks entirely to the availability of "Toodles" originals -- I'll be posting several more!. I know next to nothing about Ruth - or even that much about this strip other than that it was written by the Baers, a wife-husband team - but from what I've seen, he did some of the nicest brushwork in comics, with a great delicacy of line, and a feel for textures (the gentle fall of Mr. W's forelock in panel 1, contrasted with the deep shadows of his craggy face.. the shading and folds in the bad guy's jeans in panel 2, the wood grain of the floor...). He was also a good visual story-teller, great with caricature, gesture. This example has no year on it, I'd guess early 50s.
