DescriptionBarely three years after Moon Knight's first appearance in comics, he makes a guest appearance in Spectacular Spider-Man #22 and immediately tangles with everybody’s favorite wall-crawler. It’s a terrific cover, with a huge full-body image of Spider-Man swinging through an alley being attacked by Moon Knight throwing a slew of crescent darts! (Note the neat detail of one crescent slashing Spidey’s costume). Of course, it all turns out to be a giant misunderstanding and the two heroes eventually patch things up and join forces to take on the real bad guys, but in the meantime it’s a lot of fun to see the two heroes battling each other. The cover features dynamic depictions of both heroes by penciler Dave Cockrum and inker Joe Rubinstein. For context, this cover was drawn just as Cockrum was finishing his run on the X-Men. Also, when this cover was first published, it was Spiderman who had a TV show, as evidenced by the blurb “Marvel’s TV Sensation” under the title. Today, of course, it’s Moon Knight who has a TV show on Disney +. Wonder if Spidey will make a guest appearance?NOTE: There is another version of this cover floating around, drawn by Keith Pollard, that was never used. THIS is the actual art used for the published cover. Social/Sharing |

My Spidey senses are tingling !! Of course fans appreciate Dave Cockrum for his X-Men work and costume/character designs. But he really was a great cover artist as well.

Classic instance of "Heroes Meet, Have Misunderstanding, Battle Each Other, Realize They Are On The Same Side, Team Up To Fight Real Bad Guy!" And what a cover image! I love the dramatic action of Moon Knight hurling those crescent moons, and how one of them tears Spidey's suit. It's a great street level scene too, with an innocent bystander in jeopardy to "raise the stakes" just that much more. Brilliant grab, Bill !!

Love this one, picked it up off the racks specifically because of the rockin’ Cockrum cover, had no idea who Moon Knight was but was eager to find out, congrats!

Today all we know the reason for what the Pollard cover was unpublished...

When I see incredible pieces like this, I sometimes can’t help but feel that Cockrum’s strong association with X-Men was both a blessing and a curse. Over time, many of us have probably developed a sort of tunnel vision about his great career at Marvel. To the point where it almost seems like helping to relaunch a title that would become a comics juggernaut, was his only achievement. But I love seeing pieces like this that remind us (that reminds everyone) just how great of an artist he was. This is the second non-X Cockrum cover that’s been posted on CAF this week. And while both are phenomenal, with Spidey being my favorite character, it’s impossible for me not to favor this one. Having Moon Knight on the cover as well is just adding a bucket of icing and a jar full of cherries to an already ridiculous cake. Not the least bit surprising, as your gallery is among an elite handful that has become known for curating legendary works. Almost makes me want to take my entire gallery down in shame. Congratulations on yet another comic art masterpiece.

What a great age for a classic crossover! It's a given they fight and then team up! Even with Marvel Team Up out there, Moon Knight warranted a main Spidey title appearance! A dynamic Cockrum cover with alley way battle action bringing a darker tone. Hammond, Bixby, Carter, and Reeves made for a golden age of superhero content driving more emphasis to comics!

Dave Cockrum could do no wrong at this stage of his career... he was the master of the long, sweeping gestural lines in his figures. Great cover from a great era of funnybooks!

Ooh, dang it, Bill! I was going to go with the whole "but which one is the 'TV sensation' now?" angle, and you beat me to it... :) What an add! An absolutely phenomenal cover that packs some historical punch... A Moon Knight cover appearance right as his star was rising (profile was waxing?), drawn by Cockrum? Yes, please! Another killer, Bill! Brilliant pick up - congrats!

Marvel Universe is really going downhill. Getting so you can't hang out in a back alley in the trash without being attacked. Betting next day if that guy lives, he will pull up stakes and move to Gotham.

Upside down triangle composition make this a solid visual. Spidey's elbow to Moonknights left hand to the guys head keeps us zoomed in on the action!

1. Bill, where are you finding this stuff???
2. I didn't realize how many crescents are designed into the Moon Knight's costume.
3. I bet it was an easy transition for Cockrum to work on that cape. A little bit of Storm and Banshee in it.
4. Ahhh, New York City in the 70s. Is it really urban decay if you discard your empties in the proper receptacle?
5. I love how you point out the crescent 🌙 moon ripping open Spidey's costume in one sentence, and then say they patch things up in the next. Symbolism and puns, anyone?

This cover is so blazing it set off Pete's Spidey Sense! I remember this cover, and even picking it up as a back issue at MLCS. :) This one has it all, with heroes duking it out, webs and moon darts, a cringing Normie, full backgrounds, and even a slice through Spidey's costume. Pure awesomeness. Swinging high!

Yup, I have a whole run of Spectaculer Spidey comics and this cover definitely stands out. I love hero vs hero images, and this one's chock full of energy and depth! Add the lettering up top and bottom with both hero names sandwiching the face off?! You got a stellar piece all around. Big congrats, Bill!
