DescriptionAs a teenager with a stronger interest in the Marvel Universe than in the DC Universe but always wanting to balance out that interest, it was a perfect time to be interested in reading comics, as Crisis on Infinite Earths ushered in a relaunch of all of DC's biggest characters and titles. It was really exciting to be able to start fresh with all new approaches to these characters, all of them handled by really good, big name artists.Flash was revamped by Mike Baron, who wasn't a "big name" but was known to many indy comics fans for his really good Badger and great Nexus. On art chores, the fabulous Butch Guice was tapped, which, looking back on it now, is so weird to think about because while he already seemed like a long time veteran at the time and was a favourite of mine, had only been in the business for around 5 years by then! Unfortunately, Guice couldn't maintain the monthly schedule for very long before needing some fill-in help, before being replaced permanently. But one of the things that publishers tried harder to do back then much more often than in the current generation, is to tap artists for fill-in issues whose styles and approaches to drawing were similar to that of the regular pencillers, in hope that the visuals of the fill-in issues appeared as close to the look of the regular artist's work in order for the transition to be as smooth as possible. In this issue, British artist Mike Collins combined with the always reliable Larry Mahlstedt and they did a fabulous job of keeping the look of the book consistent. While I would've loved to have acquired a splash done by Guice, ultimately for me it's about getting great looking images of the characters, regardless of who drew said image, as long as the art is well done. This piece fits that bill for me and given that it might possible feature the largest, head to toe image of The Flash to appear on a single page and most importantly in a running pose with speed lines behind him, I literally contacted the seller the instant my eyes saw the thumbnail. I didn't even bother to look at the enlarged scan to make a buying decision. Just contacted the seller, told them I wanted it if it was still available, and the rest is history! Social/Sharing |

Great Flash splash! Having not read any of Barry Allen's adventures of the Flash, Wally West was my Flash. It was a great read. Seeing Wally go from an unsure hero trying to live up to the legacy of his mentor to becoming The Flash. Great evolution of a character and it started with these early issues. Congrats.

nice title page featuring the Flash. ecellent depiction of him running in stride at full speed. the positioning of the left leg as it pushes off while the right one prepares to come down and the torso is leaning forward. I have seen some in the past where he is almost fully straight and running at full speed that makes me scratch my head. as the song say's. "he's going the distance,he's going with speed..."

Plenty of wall power here!
Glad to see the zipatone is still attached moving at this kind of velocity ;)

FLASH! Yeah - that's an image that grabs the viewer and doesn't let go... Along with the speedlines in the splash image, you get the "multi-Flash" effect in panel 3 - and I love it when what appears to be the "real" Flash is way behind the front of the line (as it were). You have to put him there because of where the second panel was placed (I get it), but those always call forth a smile. Good heavens, but I do love comics. :) Really fun pick up, Rubén - did you get this one recently? Congrats, sir!

Alcohol. Step right up. Get your alcohol.
Nick isn't really at this address. Just a quick dip in to pick up some refreshments for the next JLA meeting.
Aquaman really packs it away, drinks like a fish.

Hee-hee-hee-hee, wipeout!
Wipin' out, wipeout, wipin' out, wipeout (ah, wah-wah)
Wipin' out, wipeout, wipin' out, wipeout (ah, wah-wah)
Wipin' out, wipeout, wipin' out, wipeout (ah, wah-wah)
Wipin' out, wipeout, wipin' out, wipeout, hey, watch out (here we go here go!)
(Wah-wah-wah) wipin' out, wipeout
For few years Guice, he ran the nation
When he got through he needed a vacation
We wanted to party and get to Wally West
So we packed our things Collins did the rest
We got our art boards, Mahlstedt inked all out
Uses a look a zip-a-tone ready to "wipeout"
Now we're ready to go
Here we go, here we go
Hup, hup-two, hup-two, hit it D, here we go
We got to DaCollector, I said head down to the feet
There were “Mike”s galore all within his reach
There was splash and sun and lots of run
But when we get there the run really begun
So we comic the box and started to shout
It was the “Mike” Boys rockin', huh-huh the "Wipeout"

Its never a good thing, in my opinion, to lose Jackson Guice as an artist on a series, but I really liked the fill in issues Collins drew. He was a perfect artist for the series at the time before Greg LaRocque took over. This is by far one of the most indelible images from the Wally West relaunch of the book.

I'm a big fan of Mike Baron's work! He brought Vandal Savage back with new powers and made Wally a great hero. The art is spotless! Congrats!

Mike Collins proved he was more than up to task and delivered some stand-out work within his fill-in issues! This title splash is great example!

Collins was a solid artist for DC back in the late 1980s/early 1990s, with a nice run on Darkstars. This has to be one of the best pieces that he did back then.

Great Flash splash Ruben, nice! I'll admit I needed a Google Search to explain the word "reconnoiter" from the last panel ;)

Prototypical shot of the Scarlet Speedster! The letters on top make me wonder...is he about to?! :) And these are some of my favorite kinds of pieces - a large splashy shot with some storytelling panels to boot. Congrats!

Fabulous Flash splash! I love Mike Collins' classic style for drawing Flash. He does an excellent job of portraying Flash as a larger than life heroic figure. I love the determined look on his face and the classic speed lines showing his superpower to best advantage. I also love how Collins' work is enhanced by Mike Mahlstedt's sharp and clean inks. Very nice piece!
