DescriptionPublished in 1997.I’ve always had a soft spot for the holiday specials put out by Marvel and DC over the years. I usually try to read one or two during each holiday season, and the specials from the 1990s hold a particularly warm place in my heart as they bring me back to a time in both comics and life that I miss. This page comes from a Flash story written by Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn with art by Paul Ryan and Dick Giordano. I don’t think any Flash writer will ever top Waid’s long run chronicling the adventures of Wally West and his strong supporting cast. A highlight of that run was Waid’s depiction of the relationship between Wally and Linda Park, and that relationship was at the center of this particular holiday tale. Ryan and Giordano were the perfect art team for this fairly down-to-earth story. The holiday seasons of the past are gone, but it’s nice to revisit things like a TV special, a holiday-themed movie or a comic book that can help bring back memories of those times. Social/Sharing |

Just be careful when you get to the final panel. Too weak a WHAP! to the head will diminish the entire performance, but too strong a WHAP! could lead to significant injury.

What she really wants is a "don't do meth in the bathroom" candle. He needs to be a better listener. Pretty sure this is what my wife asked for.
I thought odd request but hey it's her gift.

If there's one thing all meth users have in common, it's their unquestioning obedience to candles with messages on them. So, such a candle could never be a bad gift to someone who wants a meth-free bathroom.

These holiday specials were always must buys for me. Usually quieter stories that foregrounded character moments.

I come home, in the Christmas night
My Linda asks, "When you gonna put up the lights?"
Oh Linda dear, we'll have the holiday fun
But girl, this Wong Fu has none
Oh girl, just came from a run
The Flash ring, wear the costume in the night
My Linda yells, "What you gonna buy for your wife?"
Oh Lady dear, I’ll buy you Bash number one
But girl, the Wong Fu has none
Oh girl, just wanna run

I'm confident that this would have brought a smile to Cyndi Lauper's fake dad, Captain Lou Albano.

I too, always had a soft spot for the Marvel and DC holiday specials. They alway offered so lighthearted fun, which was a nice break from the usually far more serious stories going on in the regular titles. But damn, don't keep us in suspense, what did Wally finally figure out she wanted in the final panel???

Linda wanted Wally to show that he was not like Derek by actually listening to her.

Wally: Here you go.
Linda: Oh, I was just kidding about the leg. I just need these two things.
Wally: What?
Linda: No, I thought it'd be funny! Was it funny? No, wait, what'd he look like hopping around?
Wally: I had to transfer him 30,000 units!

I am also a fan of those thematic holidays stories as it presents the characters we know and love in an even more human way, easily connecting with the reader.
(But I have my own X-Mas rereading comics ;)

A most timely posting, Michael! Not only are those holiday specials timeless and worthy of revisiting regardless of the season, but I feel like this has been my own internal monologue for a couple weekends now. I only wish I had a Wong Fu Factory Outlet of my own to wander through... Really fun page with a cool panel layout, too. Great pick up, Michael!

This is a great page that captures what makes Wally such an appealing character. Paul Ryan was a superb artist who never really got his due. Thank you for sharing, my friend.
