DescriptionWilliam Vance - XIII Vol. 2: Là où va l'indien (Where the Indian Walks), p. 22 (Dargaud, 1985)In 1999, I spent 4 weeks brushing up on my French at a school in Nice before starting a new job that summer. It was there that I was introduced to European bandes dessinées (BDs) for the first time (other than Asterix and Tintin, with which I was already familiar), especially the copies of Jean Van Hamme & William Vance's "XIII" that the school had lying around. Intrigued, I sought out the local FNAC, bookstores and BD sellers and explored other titles as well, and eventually built out a pretty decent-sized library of BDs for my bookcase back in New York. My favorite BD series has always been XIII. Heavily influenced by Robert Ludlum's "The Bourne Identity", the series is about an amnesiac special operations soldier searching for the truth about his identity and past, including his role in the conspiracy behind the assassination of the President of the United States. I have long been searching for the "right" original art example from the series, at least twice narrowly missing out on securing pages I wanted. I was thrilled to finally acquire a great early example recently from the series' second volume (originally serialized in Spirou magazine), "Where the Indian Walks", featuring XIII questioning who he is and finding a clue on the back of a small photo, while his gold-digging younger step-mother Felicity sets her evil machinations into motion! I love Vance's gorgeous, detailed, "ripped" inking, especially drawn at such large scale (the page is composed of 3 large strips which, when taped together, measures almost 18 x 24"). Each panel at that size looks like a small work of art of its own, and the art just shines as a result! Social/Sharing |

The artist sure knew how to draw hair. Great looking page. Makes me want to pick up French again. I wonder if drawing the story in strips (literally bande dessinées, "tiers" in the US) leads the artist to pace the story just like daily comic strips. It definitely has that feel.

Love the throwback feeling looking at the styles in this piece. Vance is a masterful artist. Should get around to reading this.

One of the first European stories I read in the 80s. Really cool.

Very 80's with the fashions and styles of the day. Particularly nice is that 9th panel that bolsters the entire page.

Great page with the perfect content from this milestone BD in any language. I read it for the frist time maybe 7 years ago and it was a good read so it holds up. William Vance was an inspired choice for this project.

Great looking page. I'm not familiar with any French bandes dessinées, including this one. But I know great art when I see it and this page exudes that quality. Love the look of this page and the excquisite linework. Congrats on finding the one that spoke to you.
