Here's a page I'm very glad to welcome to the collection, been on the lookout for it for a long time. Thanks, DG! You rawk!

I think I've mentioned before that I've always felt that Mantlo struggled a bit with his storytelling within the new expanded pagecount format that Marvel had assigned him. I think he'd had the THIRD KARZA WAR planned out in advance for awhile, and the expanded pagecount forced him to add story padding pages to these issues. Read them again sometime, and see if you find yourself thinking "Get ON with it!" once or twice.

(He started to adjust to the new format better with issues 57 and 58, just in time for the book to be re-imagined again.)

Given the amount of padding added to the stories, I find myself a little surprised that he didn't use some of that storytelling space to expand upon the "Cosmic Debate' which took place between Rann, Karza and the Time Travelers in issues 52, 55-56. Considering that that was where the the tide TRULY turned in this cycle, more pages could have been comfortably devoted to that subplot.

Maybe I'll address that in a commission sometime.

Incredibly dense and compact! Really fine detail by Guice who made his name having this high quality. The inks by Jones provide just enough of a controlled embellishment on this page to add a fine sheen to the work!
