DescriptionAugust 1998.The late 1990s was a rough time for superhero comic books after the crazy heights of the first half of the decade. However, there were still exciting books to be found, with Grant Morrison's JLA at the top of the list. Given the success of the Morrison/Porter run, it was no surprise that DC tried to pump out multiple spinoffs, this being one of them (Morrison is even given a "special thanks" in the credits to this book). I'm guilty of buying all of those spinoffs since I loved what Morrison was doing on the flagship title and was eager to read anything that might be connected to it. Fortunately, this series was a blast, and led directly into one of my all-time favorite comics, Young Justice by Peter David and Todd Nauck. The art was split for this issue, with Mike McKone and Mark McKenna doing the first half before the adults disappear, and Ramos and Faucher doing the second half after the adults vanish (hence the title of the series). Although I'd enjoyed Ramos' work prior to this book, this was the series where I became a big fan. I love the shot of the Batcave that he and Faucher did here, complete with the Jason Todd costume encased in glass. The multiple images of Impulse showing his inability to stay still add to what makes this such a fun page. Social/Sharing |

You're absolutely right. Along with Humberto's great artwork, this page does a great job of playing up a character's personality and really adding that element of fun to the scene.

Any page with a great shot of the Batcave is a winner in my book. Throw in the only Superboy who was ever truly cool and that ever mattered? Ding! Ding! Ding! Winnah, winnah, chicken dinnah!

If you had my cave and I inked in all my brush
World that's without me?
And if somehow you grew up your love would be all through
Would you Justice League?
And call me baby
Now if I give you me, Humberto it's got to be
First of all it's Wayne Faucher inking on me
Tell me who Kon-El trust if I can't trust in you
And I Impulse to let you Robin for a fool (yeah, yeah)
You said that we (you said that we could possibly spend the late nineties)
Could possibly, spend so massively (yeah yeah yeah yeah)
See, that's what you told League, that's what you said (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
But if you grow up (you'll Justice League)
You'll grow to be (have to be fulfilling all my dreams)
Fulfilling all my dreams (yeah yeah yeah yeah)
If you really want League babe (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

Be careful with these lyrics. They may cause Ben Affleck to fall in love with you.

That was indeed a fun mini and I too bought most of them as the creators behind them were often good.
I love the ceiling pov Ramos went for here as it makes for a more interesting shot than the usual horizontal one that tries to show it all.

This somehow reminds me of that hilarious scene with multiple Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 3 :) Very nice page!

Oh, yeah, you can really see his style coming together here. I just got some work of his recently, so it's very interesting for me to compare it to yours, and the subtle changes he's made. Loved his 90s style, too. And what a great page! Dig that angle he took with the Batcave, and the great trophies he included. Sweet!

SO cool, Michael!! All the required and classic Batcave geography ("Batography"?), beautifully rendered by Humberto and Wayne! I -love- the POV here, and how they break the splash up into different 'panels' using the architecture of the cave itself; the cables holding the Joker card, the "step down" from the computer bank, the T-Rex arm... Really neat. Love the zip on the back of the penny, as well as "tracking" Impulse through the page. I guess it's official: a world without grown-ups is just super cool and lots of fun. :) Great page, Michael! Congrats!

Fun JLA page by Humberto Ramos. Love the huge scene in the Batcave with the young heroes trying to figure out what's happening. Laughed at the many images of Impulse in multiple locations all at once. Really a fun page with tons of effort put into it. Great pick-up!

So much work poured into this, from both Ramos and Faucher! I found their work on Peter Parker Spider-Man, and it was in this same vein. Ultra cartoony stylization paired with top notch draftsmanship. Love it. Congrats!
