Description

"By all means -- let's blow this mausoleum! Their wine list is beneath contempt."

I acquired some amazing early and interesting Nexus pages recently, and I will post them as I get organized.

This page is from just before the Bowl-Shaped World storyline where Nexus and Judah first meet the Badger (among other odd but key recurring characters). It has not been seen publicly since 1983.

The margins of the page show (faintly) various comments from Baron to the Dude - "Dude, what's this?" "Great page, Dude" "Dude add alien expletives". That's history in the making, folks!

I will add blowups of the margin notes, which include some working figure drawing by the Dude.

I agree with this comment 1000%. Loosen up, Horatio!

On the other hand, he was about to be sucked into a black hole singularity (whatever that is).

Spectacular. Rude had "it" from the get go. Storytelling, dynamism, and great figure work. Congrats, Doug, and thanks for sharing.

Dude knew what he was doing! This kind of play with shadow and line signified the new style of artwork coming into in the early 80's.

The is a wonderful page that encapsulates a key part of what I loved about Nexus - the crazy, fun, dynamic, goofy, alien, oddball-but relatable secondary and peripheral characters.

It's also amazing how quickly the mild awkwardness of Rude's earliest art gave way to this level of mastery. Every character is expertly positioned and posed and executed.
