Description

Sometimes dreams do come true!

Here it is - my absolute favorite piece of John Byrne/Terry Austin X-Men artwork. There is no cover, splash or interior page in the entirety of the Chris Claremont/John Byrne X-Men run - the greatest X-Men creative run ever - that hits as hard for me as this magnificent double-page splash from issue #115.

There are only five full double-page splashes and two double-page spreads in the Claremont/Byrne X-Men run. What makes this one unique is that it maximizes the extra Bristol board space like none other, with a huge image of Wolverine doing what he does best; a looming, menacing Sauron; and beautifully-drawn figures of Storm, Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Banshee in the Savage Land.

I love the way this DPS focuses on the main scene with big, bold figures and without overcomplicating the background with unnecessarily distracting elements. It's everything you want and nothing you don't need - it's simply sublime; comic art just doesn't get better than this as far as I'm concerned.

Wolverine is the character that turned me into a lifelong comics fan at a young age and, for me, this is my favorite image of the character: in costume, claws out and doing Wolverine things!

Details about the trade for this piece were discussed in this episode of the Felix Comic Art podcast: https://www.felixcomicart.com/podcastdetail.asp?pId=70

An amazing piece, JB did very few double page spreads on X-men (and FF for that matter.) I would recommend listening to the podcast as well. Glad to see this on CAF.

Will keep my opinion of this trade to myself and simply say congratulations on what is possibly the only true one-and-done piece from this epic and iconic run.  I can't help but shake my head in total disbelief every time I see this piece in a new home.  Enjoy it for as long as you can.

I think I was stunned for at least a day before I could comment!  Going from the Sauron splash closer of #114 to this iconic magic was the kind of 1-2 punch mostly reserved to Lee & Kirby, and it defined the amazing ride John, Terry & Chris were taking us on, biggest congrats!!

I'm with you: Best Byrne X-Men piece of them all. Obviously Wolverine is perfect, but man, Byrne one-ups Adams with his rendition of Sauron on this image. No easy feat. Storm looks perfect, Nightcrawler perfect....etc etc. #worthIt

Gene!~ Very happy for you my friend on multiple levels!  Congratulations! To acquire such a favorite piece must make you feel supremely satisfied (and perhaps a bit giddy in quiet moments). You know, I've been trying to collect my thoughts on this ever since you posted it on you CAFand although I won't fuilly succeed, I'll try to leave a comment worthy of it.  It's indeed a fantastic and memorable splash that hits a strong nostalgic chord - classic Claremont/Byrne/Austin X-Men- wow! And it's a beautiofully drawn striking image to be sure (and that much more striking in person) - with, I agree with you, not a single out-of-place, exaggerated or unnecessary component, whether figure, background or word balloon.  Looking up the definition of "sublime" yields concepts like "high in excellence", "exalted", "elevated", "lofty" and "quality of genius in great literary works which irresistibly delights, inspires, and overwhelms" - Damn.  Sublime indeed!
