Description

Chris Ware has been so praised that he may be so overrated that he is now underrated. Jimmy Corrigan is a masterpiece of graphic storytelling. Building Stories was an amazing interregnum of the lives within one apartment building, with the building as the main character. And Rusty Brown ...

Well the first half of this opus took close to 20 years to create 350 or so pages. This is how Ware addresses disappointment, lack of maturity, sexual inexperience, obsessiveness (of collectors) and just how in general lives can be stunted.

As a collector, I feel I need examples of each of Ware's great works - this is my first piece. This page has the elements I wanted: graphic exposition and the title character in both his actual life and his interior obsession. Ware, of course, does not number his pages, and the original art does not correspond to the published pages, but this page is among the first 20 of the book and introduces several major themes and characters. Exactly what I wanted.

The only knock on Ware I can make is that his books and art are the most difficult to store and read of any artist. This big beautiful page is 20" by 28." The published page image is 7" by 9" (for the part reproduced). Given the size of the original art, the book is very difficult to read as it is too small. Ware's desire of design preciousness conflicts here with the ability to actually enjoy the work.

And as for storage, Building Stories is by far the most difficult book to shelve I own.

But these are quibbles - Ware is one of the masters and I am thrilled to add such a strong page to my collection.

This is such a great piece it could easily be a done-in-one and Ware is worthy of any praise, regardless of volume, and not everyone is equipped to deal with his work. I love the hell out of it, and humbly offer my wall as storage solution.

There's no such thing as a poorly-designed Chris Ware page. A true master. Congrats, Doug!
