Description

If you are going to NYCC each October, go big or go home! I went into the fair intending to "just look," and walked out with this classic underground cover from Spain Rodriguez. There were only 6 issues of Skull comics, and issues 4 and 5 were devoted to H.P. Lovecraft influenced stories. Some work illustrated actual Lovecraft pieces, while others like Spain interpreted Lovecraft into new stories. From Last Gasp and, apparently, "Underground Cartoon Workers," an early attempt at labor organization among comic artists. Spain was called the "socialist soul" of the underground comics movement.

A classic UG cover entirely drawn by the master Spain. Such tremendous detail - but also slipping in some funny stuff. "Satan Saves." The double entrendre: "Don't Humor Me."

They say the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain, but I see nothing plain about this!

Gorgeous Spain piece. Scott had a great one in San Diego. Unfortunately, only so much money to go around!

They had their own kind of charm to be as subversive as possible and made to challenge Middle America. Spain did it with an artistic flair that few would be able to outdo him.
