DescriptionIn a Man-Thing style twist on Romeo & Juliette, two star-crossed lovers whose families hate each other, embark on a plan to unite them. Kip and Tally run away together, each of them leaving a note to their family about where in the swamp they have gone, in the hope that the families will join together to form a search party. Alas, it was not to be. The families squabble and fight, while Tally is pulled down into quicksand, unable to attract their attention. Initially reacting to her fear, the Man-Thing decides to put her out of her misery, but then pauses – and eventually pulls out her dead body, dumping it nearby. Seeing Tally dead, poor Kip takes his father’s gun and kills himself. It never ends well, does it?On this page, Buscema uses a slow storytelling pace to show Tally drowning and then Kip picking up the gun. Springer’s inks are delicate in places, to highlight the family members’ expressions, and bold in others to draw attention to the drowning and the gun. A very poignant telling of the tale. Ha ha! That which we call a Bog Beast, by any other name would smell as... sweet?

Ha ha! So true. It really is a tale of two stories - seen only in terms of the rawness of fear by the Bog Beast at the top, and only in terms of the raw pain of humanity in the bottom tier.

Thanks Paul! Man-Thing pages that actually have Man-Thing on can be a rare commoditiy, and Buscema finds a storytelling reason to even gradually squeeze him out of the panels in the top sequence, making him seem even more distant from the 'human' scene.

a sad and tragic sequence of events, told with expert sequential precision by Buscema and Springer.

Great emotion shown! Buscema pulls the life spirit out of the boy and makes him so vulnerable.

Really love the ant's eye view of the fifth panel, highlighting the gun which will add to this tragedy!

Yes, it is the panel that is doing so much of the heavy lifting here, given the rest of the storytelling is so slow. It's the 'angry', dynamic part, and Buscema did choose an interesting angle for it. Thanks.
