Description

In the classic “Outlaw” story, Johnny Alpha and Wulf Sternhammer are falsely accused of instigating a massacre at Jock’s Landing, framed by the sinister Stix brothers. The bounty hunters par excellence become the prey of their fellow Strontium Dogs, and have to employ all of their talents to avoid capture or death, while they attempt to clear their names.

This page has plenty of Ezquerra hallmarks, with the circular panel drawing the eye into the action being a particular one. There’s also a playfulness with Johnny Alpha’s gun pointing into that circle as though firing the electro-flare into it, at an impossible angle for the flattened page. The neat angle in the final panel is also very characteristic. The high-intensity page shows Alpha and Wulf making their escape, desperately trying to avoid hurting their fellow Strontium Dogs (mutant bounty hunters), even though they are thinking only of the bounty on Alpha’s head.

Thanks to my good friend Robert Cox for selling me this one.

Love pages with circular panels, separating them from your standard fare. Detail for days from Carlos. What a page!

Thanks! Yes, the level of detail is just crazy, and he kept turning it in episode after episode.

Excellent page! The level of detail is quite impressive. Johnny Alpha’s gun "firing" into the circular panel might be one of the most unique adjacent panel sequences I've ever seen in a comic page. Really cool!

Thanks Kavi. Yes, Carlos' panel arrangements could be very playful. The gunfire is almost like an arrow leading your eye into the circle. He had a lot of tricks like that up his sleeve.

Cracking page! So much action jumping out of the page at you. Love the way the artists had to be so clever with the special fx back then.

True, and he didn't even resort to zipatone.

Just amazing how it connects the 2nd and 3rd panels!  Stepping back, the dense linework gives the circle a spherical quality!

Makes me wish I had kept the four black and white pages of Ezquerra SD I had. I traded three with the friendly shark and sold one to a guy who ended up selling it on Heritage.
