Description

While Kamandi, Doctor Canus and Pyra do appear on the page, you may need to click on the image and zoom in to see them. This chapter splash is really a showcase for Kirby’s futuristic world vision, of epic architecture being reclaimed by nature gone wild. The “Hotel” in the story is in Acapulco, and to enable humans to re-use the enormous building, Kamandi has to fight a pack of man-wolves.

For me, this was also a great opportunity to get a page with that fabulous Kirby title lettering – so important in creating a sense of real excitement in his issues of Kamandi. And D. Bruce Berry does a nice job of contrasting the slick, shiny building against the gnarled and broken tree branches.

It can't be "more Kirby"! Such a very beautiful title splash. Any comic collector's gallery should have a piece like this one. That's so good my friend.

The tiny figures emphasize the scale of the complex nicely. Serious Planet of the Apes meets The Omega Man vibes!

A Kirby title page is special!  They are going to need a lot of landscapers though.

Excellent Kirby Kamandi chapter title splash! As a fellow fan of Kirby/Berry artwork and storytelling from Kamandi, I salute and congragulate you on this addition to your collection (and/or thanks for sharing it with us here if you've owned it a long time!). The Chapter Title splashes with that awesome title lettering up top like you pointed out especially hook you in as well.

As only Jack can, it invokes that eerie emptiness of The Prisoner, congrats!

Oh dear, isn't this where Ruben has gone? I still hope they have the imported Mexicans there at least.

Gotta love it as Kirby wanted to emphasize the vastness of this scene and chose the splash to do it!  Stong, bold, and filling the splash all around to immerse us in the story!

The sense of gigantism is so great.

(I've got  "wobbly cityscape" and you've got  wobbly title lettering :)

The Kamandi books were great with their multiple chapter splashes, allowing Kirby to expound his vision of the apocalyptic future. And this a a great example!

Outstanding Kirby Kamandi splash!  What stands out for me is the sheer scale and dramatic composition that Kirby evokes for the reader-- how can you resist turning the paget  Great pick-up!

Nice title splash! The hand lettering and the design of the foliage immediately transform a standard hotel building into something otherworldly. This is a wonderful example of how powerful his style was.

Such a cool, splash!  Definitely giving of a "you can check in, but never check out" kind of vibe. :)  And I like Berry's inks here for the exercise of seeing just how much you can strip out and still have it be unmistakably Kirby.  What's left is almost a wireframe, but there's no escaping those vines, is there. :) Classic and fun, and (as one who lives in a vacation destination) a recognizable truth in the line "BECAUSE THE TOURISTS STILL COME!!" :) Great add, Paul!

Feels like a title page from his early Silver Age Marvel monster stories! The tree is like an octopus swallowing the building! Enhances the otherworldliness of dystopian Earth. I would be nervous about planning a trip to Alcapulco after seeing this page!

Ha ha! Yes, not a great destination there, Peter. "To Acapulco (to Acapulco). That's where they'll find us. In sunny blue waters. Where the sand is warm and friendly.".
