Heroes Redrawn

The comic books of today look very different than the comics of the Golden, Silver and Bronze ages. That's due to a variety of reasons, one of which is the evolution of artistic styles throughout the decades. A comic book drawn in 2016 stands in stark contrast to one drawn 70 years or more earlier. It was my interest in seeing the comics of the past compared to the comics of the present that was the inspiration for the Heroes Redrawn Project.

Old, obscure characters and comics have long held a fascination for me. Everyone knows Superman, Batman and Spider-Man, but who knows about the Black Cobra, or Dagar the Desert Hawk, or the Bronze Terror? Relative few, because unlike their more successful counterparts, these characters often starred in short-lived titles or features, from companies long-defunct. For every A-lister you see today from Marvel and DC, there's dozens of Z-listers, some of whom may have not even made it past one sometimes-crudely drawn story in one issue.

So -- how would those characters and their stories look if they were being drawn for the first time today instead of decades ago? That's the challenge I put before some of today's contemporary artists: To take pages from comics published during an earlier era and redraw them today using their own layouts, poses, backgrounds, etc. The characters of yesterday as drawn by the artists of today. I believe the results have been very intriguing, to say the least.

One last thing: A big tip of the hat to the man who inspired this project: Brian "Marvel Two-in-One 76 Guy" Brian Sagar. It was through his gallery that I first saw sequential page reimagined pages done, so this project probably wouldn't exist if not for him. A big salute to a great visionary.

And so, I present the Heroes Redrawn Project. You'll get to see some great artwork, get a glimpse of the heroes of the past, and hopefully learn some comics history along the way. Enjoy!
