I am glad to see it up on CAF again. It belongs with you, it always did. I knew it when you saw it in Chicago all those years ago and a few years before you owned even your first piece of strip art. I had no idea about the empire you would build as a shrine to this piece but it is a piece of art well deserving of that reverance. It had an interesting journey between our two collections and was on the wall of one of the greatest figures in the history of comic art collecting until he passed away. I am so glad it all worked out and its little junket just adds to its importance, history and provenance. That was the part I was going to mention to Stephen F above - the strip did not go from me to you...there was another stop along the way! The fact that it made it's way back to me is a minor miracle. Stephen F - that will be a dinner conversation topic fro you & me at SDCC 2025! |

Yes, this is a masterpiece. And yes, it sublime; and the last panel transcends simple language into something ethereal. Yet the next panel that features her devouring fish and chips with her mouth open really communicates the socio-gastronomics of the late 1950s England in a way that this panel simply does not. Therefore I suggest letting me look after it while I buy you a fish and chips at Lady Gregory. (Worth a shot!) In the category of 'unique comments'...it just does not get much better than this one! |

It would be easy enough to say that middle close-up panel steals the show. But I am absolutely mesmerized by that scene in the last panel. The angle is nothing short of perfect. And I love the sense of depth on the left side of the panel that he achieves just by the subtle variance of his hatchwork. This is sublime. We're twin sons of different mothers. The art in all three panels is gorgeous, but the third panel is just so hauntingly moody that you can't stop looking at it. I distinctly remember being drawn into it at the Club Lago dinner with Jeff! |
