John Walter Customs of Danger Colliers Mid Century Magazine Illustration Art Owner: Duke Fleed aka #1 Groo Fan Comment posted on 5/1/2019 Beautiful! Walter is a perfect example of why America dominated mid 1950's illustration. There were so many highly skilled illustrators in those days that even ones as skilled as Walter still feel by the wayside and became relatively unknown, even to illustration fans. |

Earl Mayan - Epitaph for a Spy 1953 cover Owner: Duke Fleed aka #1 Groo Fan Comment posted on 2/26/2018 This is an Earl Mayan cover. Such a bloody shame about the condition, for obvious reasons, but perhaps doubly so given that Mayan covers so rarely turn up. |

Batman Splash by Don Newton Owner: Larry Wilson Comment posted on 2/14/2018 This is an absolutely wonderous Batman splash from my favorite Batman era! Don Newton was a great penciler, with his strengths being his great storytelling, which leads the eye around from panel to panel seamlessly, very solid anatomy and spotting his blacks wonderfully to make for great composition. Newton did NOT have anything about his actual line that stood out, though, so he was actually the perfect type of penciler to have a highly stylized inker working with him. During the early 80's, the Bat books had some of the most beautiful finished art of any title ever published, and regardless of whether it was Newton, Hoberg, or even the legendary Gene Colan penciling the books, the one common denominator and the singlemost reason for the books having that delicious and hugely atmospheric look, was that the stupendous Alfredo Alcala was the embellisher. He was the glue that held the look of the books together regardless of changing pencilers, and more than anyone else, is responsible for the final overall look of those books. So kudos to both men, whose work is dearly missed, and kudos to you, Larry, for owning such an incredible piece of the Batman mythos! |

Matt Clark Illustration American Weekly 1947 Owner: Fernando Arteaga Comment posted on 11/7/2017 Beautiful work. Yes, the "chain of influence" begins with Matt Clark, who influenced John La Gatta, and both of whom influenced Alex Raymond. Raymond's style can clearly be seen in many of Clark and La Gatta's black and white inked pieces, especially the ones in which dry brush technique is apparent. |

Sexy! good to see this one still exists!! ![]() Yes, very cool acquisition, John! But fyi, the artist isn't Hulings. It's a George Erickson cover. Even though some low life inexplicably scratched out the signature at the bottom left, he scratched out the E in the same shape that Erickson always painted it. This was published on the cover of The Storm and The Silence by David Walker (Lion Library 33). |
