Don Simpson is best known as the creator of the satirical superhero Megaton Man for Kitchen Sink Press and Image Comics, the science fiction saga Border Worlds (collected by Dover Publications in 2017), and most recently Marvel’s one-shot CRAZY! reboot (2019). A veteran of the 80s-90s creator-owned indy movement, Don has also freelanced as penciler, inker, and letterer for nearly every comic book imprint in the late twentieth century including Mirage Studios (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Image Comics (Splitting Image and Savage Dragon vs. Megaton Man), Fantagraphics (King Kong and In Pictopia), and DC Comics (Wasteland). Under his Fiasco Comics imprint, Don self-published 17 issues of Bizarre Heroes, a universe of characters surrounding the cast of Megaton Man.
Since 2019, Don has authored a weekly prose novel, The Ms. Megaton Man Maxi-Series at msmegatonman.blogspot.com, a more sober, mature take on his imaginative universe.
Don is also famous (notorious!) for his erotic work under the pseudonym Anton Drek, creator of Wendy Whitebread, Undercover Slut #1 and #2, Forbidden Frankenstein #1 and #2, Dracula's Daughter #1, and Anton's Drekbook (all collected in the Eros graphic novel Anton's Collected Drek, 1992). Although now over two decades in the past and representing less than a tenth of his total creator-owned output, the Anton Drek material continues to have a devoted international following, having been translated into French, Italian, Spanish, and Finnish.
These include Wendy Whitebread, Zorra de la Secreta, serialized in Kiss Comix #1-4 (Barcelona: Ediciones La Cúpula S.L., 1991); Bernard Joubert's Drekbook: l’intégrale d’Anton Drek (Paris: Dynamite, 2005); Eros Comix N. 2—Wendy Whitebread, Undercover Slut (Roma: Edizioni Blue Press/Eros Comix, 2005); and Paula Patonki, Piilokyttänarttu (1994) and Frankensteinin Perhekalleudet (1995), (Helsinki: Sötem).
Don has also collaborated with a number of notable authors including Alan Moore (In Pictopia for Fantagraphics and 1963 for Image Comics); legendary comedic actor and improv guru Del Close (DC's Wasteland); comedian and U.S. Senator Al Franken ("Supply Side Jesus" and "Operation Chickenhawk" in Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, 2003), and working-class curmudgeon Harvey Pekar (American Splendor).
Don has also collaborated with such notable comics writers as Dan Slott (She-Hulk), William Messner-Loebs (Flash), Dan Mishkin and Gary Cohn (Secret Origins), John Ostrander (Munden's Bar), Steve Murphy (Archie's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures), Batton Lash (Wolff & Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre), and Jim Pascoe (Zombie Tales: The Dead #1, Boom!).
As logo designer, Don created the distinctive look of GASP!, Exhibit "A" Press's Wolff & Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre and Supernatural Law, Kitchen Sink's Death Rattle, and the Image 1963 titles Mystery Incorporated, Tales of the Uncanny, and No One Escapes the Fury. Don also notably inked a Roger Rabbit story for Disney Comics and a Gil Kane Green Lantern serial for DC's Action Comics Weekly.
In War of the Independents #4 (Red Anvil Comics, 2017), Don became one of the few cartoonists ever authorized to officially draw such distinguished creator-owned characters as Bill Griffith's Zippy the Pinhead
