DescriptionI love how much joy this strip packs into a single image. It was published on Christmas Day, 1981, as part of The World’s Greatest Superheroes daily newspaper strip from the Chicago Tribune and it perfectly captures that playful, once-a-year magic you only get in holiday comics. The concept alone, while silly, makes me smile: Superman swoops in as the reindeer, mid-flight, while Batman takes on the role of Santa Claus, riding high above the city with gifts in tow. It’s whimsical and it leans fully into the fun of seeing these iconic heroes step outside their usual roles just for the holiday. Superman’s effortless strength and motion feel tailor-made for pulling Santa’s sleigh, while Batman’s stoic presence as Santa makes for a nice contrast. Artistically, it’s a great example of early ’80s newspaper superhero storytelling. Bold linework, confident anatomy, and a cinematic sense of movement that reads instantly even at strip size. The layout feels celebratory, almost like a splash panel disguised as a daily strip, which makes perfect sense for Christmas Day. Pretty solid work by two veteran artists whose work I'm normally not a big fan of. For me, this piece is a reminder of how special these holiday strips were. They weren’t just another installment, they were a gift to readers, a moment where creators clearly had fun and invited us to share in it. I think that as with most Christmas day newspaper strips, this offers a blend of craftsmanship, nostalgia, and pure holiday joy. The fact that it is a rare, single panel daily also adds to what makes this particular strip such a standout, and why I’m excited to end the year by sharing this original art. Social/Sharing |
