Description

Ron Dias was a prominent background and concept painter for Walt Disney and other animation studios for over 40 years.

He began working in animation in 1956 on Disney's Sleeping Beauty as an in-betweener, but he is perhaps best known for his dramatic and moody backgrounds in Scooby Doo Where are you?, The Secret of Nimh, Dragon's Lair, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.

Dias's final Disney film was working as the art director for the Toon Town sequence of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and this painting is from that sequence, showing what the city would look like at nighttime (ca. 1986). Notice the police "wanted" poster for Bugs Bunny.

Ron Dias was a friendly, generous, and talented artist. I got to meet him at a convention and had a long talk one time. Ron drew many Little Golden Books so many children saw his work. The Cartoon Art Museum had a great exhibit of his artwork.
