Description

This is one of four Captain Atom pages by Pat Broderick I picked up in a package deal, but I've put this one and two others in my JLA gallery due to the appearance of three members of the humor-era Justice League. Mind you, the tone of this story was far from goofy, as Booster, Beetle and Mr. Miracle are here to confront Captain Atom over the lies he's told the team and the world.

Unlike the page from Captain Atom #26 (see my Nuclear Family gallery), this one features letters right on the board, not pasted on. I like the cross-hatching here to create a darker atmosphere. I also note with this interest that this board and the other three I acquired in the same deal all follow a six-panel grid structure (with this one and one other combining the final two panels in the grid for one widescreen panel to cap the page).

Among the reasons I enjoy this page are Broderick's cool depiction of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, and the appearance of the villainous Bolt. The 1989 board also boasts a number of vintage qualities I always love -- whiteout corrections, blue-pencil editing marks and the copyright stamp on the back.

Like the other pages in this lot, it's signed by Broderick in pencil on the reverse. Furthermore, while this is Page 7 of the story, a small mark at the top of the board indicates it was the ninth page when one factors in ads in the final printed product.
