Description
This is an original etching of the first ever popular Finnish cartoon character. His name was Matti and he appeared in the newspaper Uusi Suomi in the 20s. This image was used as a cover for one of the book collections of the series. By his own account the artist Eric Vasstrom (1887-1958) was the first full-time staff cartoonist in Finland. He was a true pioneer of the field, and maybe even a patron saint: he started his career before Finland got its independence in the Russian revolution, and was actually jailed when one of his cartoons was seen offending the Czar. This caused a patriotic uproar, and when Vasstrom's sentence was announced, a university students' choir sang him the national anthem.
Vasstrom did many of his cartoons with pre-photographic methods (he published his own cartoon magazine in the 20s where all the graphics were printed as original lino cuts), so it is doubtful whether many, or indeed any, of his original cartoon drawings have survived. He's also credited for making the first Finnish film animation but, alas, all of that work has been lost to history.
Only a handful of people would recognize Vasstrom and his Matti today.
