I recently acquired a J.H. Williams III page for a great price, but as is my usual practice, I asked the seller about adding onto that order. The result: this G.I. Combat page (for a song, honestly). While I was never a big war-comic guy, I did appreciate DC's Dollar Comics of the 1980s; there was so much material for such a good price, and as a kid, I wanted to get the most bang for my buck (still do).

Artist Gerry Talaoc employs a loose approach here, which suits the grisly nature of war stories nicely. Even with that rougher style, I like how he brings the Dutch countryside to life here, notably the windmill. I also like the loose nature of the sound effects on the page; again, they work well with the old, basic nature of the windmill backdrop. Talaoc also adds a lot of gritty, dirty texture to the setting with some meticulous cross-hatching with the inks.

While this is Page 5 of this story, it was the second segment in the issue, so a notation at the top right corner suggests this was Page 25 in the final product (I think). Another element I love here is the pasted-on box at the bottom right, indicating the reader has to slog through a couple of pages of ads before continuing with this story. Such "continued on" captions faded later in the 1980s, so it's another vintage tough that I appreciate.

In addition to a 1983 copyright stamp from DC Comics on the back, there's another, smaller, circular stamp at the top of the reverse. It reads "DC INVT'Y 11-30-83." Clearly, this was an inventory story DC commissioned without a specific publication in mind. It wouldn't be published for another year (cover date November 1984). This is a rare element that offers another perspective on the publishing process, and anything that like that offers a peek behind the creative curtain is something I cherish in a board.
