DescriptionI've been slowly adding the OA I acquired on my last trip to Tokyo, and with Halloween upon us, it was the right time to add this really cool Vampirella illustration to my gallery. Vampirella and the other black & white magazines were on upper shelves at the drug store where I bought most of my comics when I was a kid. The covers were a bit more lurid, a bit more sexy, and a lot more forbidden than the regular comics I purchased. The day I was finally big and old enough to reach those magazines, I could not resist finding out just what this Vampirella thing was all about.Except for the Spirit Magazine, which I picked up fairly regularly, the Warren books, with their exotic European-style art, remained a spice I would add to my reading pile pretty much up until the company stopped publishing. Which, oddly enough, brings me to the Japanese artist, Tomo (AKA, Tomoko Hirabayashi). I've admired Tomo's work for several years now. She is a published illustrator and manga artist, who, it was clear from the moment I saw some of her published fantasy illustrations, has been greatly influenced by Warren-era artists like Esteban Maroto. The first conversation I had with her was about these Western influences, and she was quite surprised I spotted them as these artists are not so well known in Japan. Recently, along with her fantasy art, she has been drawing Western comic book characters and posting the work on social media sites. I was particularly impressed with a pinup she did of Marvel's Hela. So, this month, when I went to a mini art con in Tokyo at which I knew she'd be setting up a table, I went straight over to see if she still had it. She did, and I quickly picked it out, thinking I would purchase it. "But what about the Vampirella?" she asked me. I took a look at it and I remembered that first conversation that we'd had. I also noticed that she had used the Vampi on the cover of the art book she had made to sell at conventions. My choice was now obvious. Sorry, Hela, but it was a certain scantily clad vampire from the planet Drakulon who was going home with me on this day. Social/Sharing |
