I love Tomo's (Tomoko Hirabayashi's) art and always pick something up from her when I travel to one of the "Ame-Komi" art shows in Tokyo (or, in this case, Kawasaki). This time, I was thinking of getting her to do a commission, but when I saw this one, I thought it was way too cool not to pick it up. It is the cover for an Italian "fumetti" fanzine that was published in Japan: フメットへの招待状 (Fumetto e no Shohtaijoh/Invitation to Fumetto).

I loved the way she applied her style, which is mixture of Japanese manga and European influences, to these characters, some more familiar than others. It's a great montage with Hugo Pratt's Corto Maltese and Guido Crepax's Valentina centering the drawing. Also included are the groundbreaking antihero, Diabolik, who was created by Angela and Luciana Giussani, the skull-faced, Killing, who, according to Wiki, was published by Ponzoni and editor Pietro Granelli with each episode directed by actor and singer Rosario Borelli, the beautiful but deadly, Satanik created by Magnus and Max Bunker, Dylan Dog, a paranormal investigator created by Tiziano Sclavi, the sexy swashbuckling, Isabella, created by Renzo Barbieri, Giorgio Cavedon and Sandro Angiolini, Nazisploitation character, Hessa of the SS Sex Sonder Sturmtruppen (I have no idea who the creators are; also, yes, from what little I've seen of her exploits, this fumetto is probably as bad as you might think) and, I've been told, the lady in the domino mask is Namur.

Unique and very cute rendition of these famous Italian comics characters! I'd be very curious to see an entire Manga story featuring each of them, but especially Valentina and Satanik :)
