DescriptionAlex Raymond and his creation, Flash Gordon, had an enormous influence on the generation who consumed it. Not just for readers in their enjoyment of the archetypical characters he created and the lavishness of his art. Nor just for young and emerging artists who would be inspired by his craft and routinely swipe from his layouts, images and style. But, his most enduring and difficult to fully measure influence was in the minds, imaginations and creative futures of children and young adults who would go on to define the next generations of galaxy spanning stories – such as George Lucas, who cites Raymond as a major influence on his creation, Star Wars. This Sunday from February 23, 1936 features Flash, Dale & Zarkov. It’s paired with its matching Jungle Jim topper from the same day, all a little over two years into a strip that Raymond would artistically helm until 1943. It was in 1936 that he fully converted the layout of the strip from four tiers to two tiers (he started dabbling with format in the second half of 1934). This doubled the size of the panels within which he could draw and lessened the degree of visual clutter at the same time. Couple this with his usage of a dry brush and ink technique borrowed from pulp illustrators of the time, and the imagery took on a depth and textual quality that gave the series a feel of being an illustrated novel, rather than a comic strip. The image I’m posting clearly does not do justice to the piece. It’s framed, huge and being enjoyed on a daily basis in my home office. When I can bring myself to part with it for a few days, I’ll get it professionally photographed and upload a better image. Until then, just wanted to share it. Heading to see the new Stars Wars movie today and certainly seemed like the right time to post. I’m also posting an original printed Sunday of the piece, graciously tracked down and provided to me by Rob Pistella, the prior steward of this piece. Thank you, Rob! Hope you enjoy. And, hope everyone enjoys the holidays! Social/Sharing |

What an incredible piece to have... The Jungle Jim alone would be great, but the Flash Gordon is beyond awesome! Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Chris, what a beautiful example you landed! Complete with Flash and Dale and Zarkov adventuring and thwarting Ming - what more could you ask for? Well, the absolutely gorgeous Raymond brushwork of course. Happy for you, my friend!

What a truly amazing example of Alex Raymond's Jungle Jim and Flash Gordon, major congrats on acquiring these works of art and becoming the new curator! Can I get a private showing? lol Btw I just start watching the original Flash Gordon serials on Youtube and love seeing how George Lucas infused some of the elements into his own Star Wars series. Again major congrats!

What is there to say that hasn't already been said about Raymond's art? Nothing, because it's all been said before. But there's nothing wrong with saying it again! Not only is the brush work absolutely exquisite, but you landed an example with excellent character content as well. Top notch, Chris!

Each of the three pages you added over the last two days would, by themselves, be a highlight in almost any collection and worthy of comment. However, as much as I love the other two, your Raymond is in a class by itself. Cheers!

Chris, this is stunning! Best period of Raymond on Flash run. Many congratulations, where do you want to go from there?

I think you should change your moniker to "Go big or go home" as you find the best pieces to add to your collection. Truly a great Sunday with Raymond's more painterly style which was his hallmark on Flash of the era. Gorgeous.
