DescriptionOne of those strange moments you can not anticipate. Part of the fun of adventure and taking a lets see what happens approach to travel and new experiences. 2018 was my first time traveling to Angouleme,France for their big comic festival. I have wanted to go for years and have actually booked that time off for the last 5 or 6 years hoping it would work out. It is not the easiest convention to get to. It takes place in a small, medieval town/city in the Bordeaux in the south of France. It is winter. The town is small and all the hotels are booked up indefinitely by publishers and promoters. I didn't think I was going this year but when in Tokyo with Chris and Peter from the Beguiling comic shop, they mentioned they might be going this year. Then I heard that this year there were two special exhibitions featuring manga gods Tezuka and Urasawa. At that point I decided this was the year. I found a spot to stay a 5 min walk from the main town/festival area on AirBNB. I bought festival tickets on line, booked a flight to Paris and then arranged the train tickets too and from the festival. I was set. I arrived a day early to avoid the crowds and to look around the city. On the first day I decided to start with Manga pavilion and so I got in line. It opened at 10 and there was already a long line when I got there at 9:20. Once inside I saw a line for dedications by Urasawa. I had not realized he was going to be at the show and I was thrilled enough at getting to see some of his art in person. I got in line for the dedication. After an hour they capped the line and counted up the number. There was then a lottery from those that lined up to get a dedication. I happened to get one of those spots. Uraswa arrived like a rock star with an entourage including 2 video camera guys and another with a big microphone boom plus other handlers. I got a little sketch from him in my copy of Monster 1 (I had to buy it there and so it is a French language version), I got to shake his hand and get a picture with him. If you don't know Uraswa's manga, you are missing out on something truly special. Although many love Pluto the best, I prefer Monster and 20th Century Boys. I just started reading Master Keaton and I am liking that a lot too. The Urasawa exhibition they had was brilliant. I took literally hundreds of photos and have the catalog (French language as well). That is my Ursawa and Angouleme moment.Social/Sharing |

Wonderful. I read his Pineapple Army from Viz in the 1980's. I loved Master Keaton, too. I just discovered he does a TV series "Manben" where he talks with manga artists after a crew films the artist drawing. Found it on Youtube with English subtitles.
