Description

Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2018

Here's a Cardy rarity. It wasn't often that Nick drew soldiers or any kind of war theme for a comic. I asked Nick why that was, thinking it was because he'd seen too much of a real war. Nick just said noone asked him.

A lot of the details were obliterated by the dark coloring on this. Also, you'll see a chair was originally in the foreground but was blacked out for the cover blurb.

Nick was originally drafted into the 66th Infantry Division, where he redesigned their shoulder patch. Later, Nick was transferred to the Third Armored Division as a tank driver.

Great cover! It's too bad Nick wasn't asked to do war comics, would have been amazing stuff, up there with Kubert and Heath.

Cardy is one of THE great cover artists of all time—love the composition of this one.  Jealous congrats!

The original is much better than the printed version. Great Cardy art!

Agree with Jeremy. Great composition and depth on this one. Terrific Cardy example.

The cover image of so many Sgt Rock or Losers stories was of them walking into an ambush. By mixing war/ghostly horror, Nick Cardy gives this a very cool twist

Maybe this issue should have been called: "Tales of the Dark Mansion of Forbidden Combat #14"?

Love the perspective on this one! And of course the art is spectacular.

This beautiful Cardy cover reminds me of something that struck me while I was watching a Twilight Zone episode last weekend: You know what Rod Serling and Ed Wood had in common?  A love of the military.  They both fit it into their work as often as they could.  With different results, I must add, but it did strike me.

Thanks for reminding us of The Purple Testament, a Twilight Zone classic, as are they all.
