From the perspective of the old comic books, the rights are split. IDW PUBLISHING currently has the license to produce comics based on the TOY characters, such as Acroyear, Time Traveller, Pharoid, Force Commander, Space Glider, and Baron Karza. MARVEL still owns the rights to characters created for the 1970's book, such as Bug, Marionette, Slug, and Commander Rann. But there's nothing (besides RAGNAROK) stopping IDW asking Walt to do a cover or two...

When I saw this in that pic of the various commissions that Walt did for that SDCC dinner, I wondered “Wow, who picked Baron Karza?” NOW it makes sense! Unique choice and awesome image—congrats!

...well, somebody used their Simonson Opportunity to have him deliver Santa Claus, so my request couldn't have been THAT much of a head-scratcher in comparison. (To each his own, I suppose. He seemed very happy with his St. Nick!) See secondary image now attached.
