Description

Realising that he has been sent to another dimension to defeat the Night-Crawler and thereby release the Undying Ones to Earth, the ever courageous Bruce Banner resolves to die rather than become the Hulk and bring about that fate. His plan to ruin Van Nyborg’s plot to free the Undying Ones is itself about to be undone, as Barbara Norris (later to become the Valkyrie) finally comes to regret her part in the cult's activities. In finding the courage to stand up to Van Nyborg, she seals her own fate, and will shortly be sent into that dimension to become the ‘damsel in distress’ that only the Hulk can save. The parable of the hero resigned to their terrible fate, so familiar in the Incredible Hulk during Herb’s tenure, carries on into the Defenders, making this story-arc a perfect lead-in to Marvel’s greatest title. (This original Night Crawler was renamed the Dark Crawler in reprints, so as not to be confused with the X-Men character – but he was the Original Behemoth to hold that moniker, True Believer!) Herb cleverly crowds the top panel with the Night Crawler’s crouched frame, emphasising its size in comparison to puny Banner. White-out corrections suggest that Herb changed his mind about the styling of Van Nyborg’s sorcerous outfit.
