DescriptionThe Defenders had never been at their more noble than in their quest to rescue the Black Knight, trapped in another dimension that left his body as a stone statue. Here, Strange allocates the tasks of acquiring six components of the Evil Eye to the six members of the Defenders (including the temporary member, Hawkeye). Sub-Mariner persuades the Hulk to join the quest based on his alleged fondness for the Black Knight. They should just have told him that he’d have the opportunity to pummel Thor into oblivion and he’d have been all in for this mission. This page is the biggest patchwork of paste-overs and tape-unders that I have ever seen (although a lot of Bob Browns Avenger pages of the time seem to suffer from this to some extent). It is almost as though there were editing-stage story changes that required a re-ordering of panels. The final panel included a variety of paste-ups, perhaps for some last minute changes about depicting our heroes flying off in different directions, and sadly the Hulk one detached itself at some point prior to my purchase of the page – leaving just a trailing leg. Some text paste-up corrections have dropped off, leaving Hawkeye seemingly uttering the immortal line to Doctor Strange “Say no more six fiend.” I think Bob Brown has done an extraordinary job on this page, conveying the supreme confidence and otherworldliness of Strange (in the glorious top panels), and the urgency and seriousness of this quest – one of the most epic Marvel stories ever told. I can still feel the excitement I did as a child at the enormity of a fight between these two teams. The Earth still shakes to this day. There is evidently much reworking and white-out of the top right face of Strange, raising his hairline and removing a finger, and some redrawing (very likely by John Romita) to lengthen his nose.
