Commemorating Nick's 100th birthday.
Just a bunch of characters that Nick worked on. There were a lot to choose and I made an "executive decision" for one of them. The more I look at Nick's art, the more I think he made it look too easy.
Characters that Nick worked on early in his career and/or co-created are in the center. Non-Nick characters are generally on the left and right sides.
Where appropriate, I made some notes re: costumes.
TOP
- Superman - Nick drew a bunch of covers for Superman and Action Comics. Oddly, Nick never drew a Superman story. Or how about a Lois / Lana cat fight ??
- Batgirl - "executive decision" here. I've added Batgirl because I really love Nick's cover to Superman 279. Nick trivia: he hated ruling lines !!!
- Wonder Woman - Nick drew a few Wonder Woman covers after the period where she lost her powers ( the "new" Wonder Woman ) and regained them. WW originally had the striped boots. After the "new" Wonder Woman period, she didn't have the stripe. That's when Nick drew his WW covers. The stripe returned about 2 dozen issues later.
- Peecolo ( Lady Luck's assistant / chauffeur ) - Nick created Peecolo ( piccolo is Italian for small ).
- Lady Luck - Before being drafted into World War II, Nick drew Lady Luck in the Spirit section of the Sunday newspapers for about a year.
- Quicksilver - Another character Nick drew before going to war. He appeared in a few issues of National Comics. At that point, he was being credited as Nick Cardy or even Nicky Cardy, probably one of his first credits in print. I think the last time Nick drew him was for Flash 214 ( 100 pager, back cover ).
- Senorita Rio - Nick was the first artist to draw her in Fight Comics 19. She didn't really have a standard costume. She generally wore a red dress or gown. In her first appearance, she appears in a gown.
- Major Dabney, Margot Cantrell, Mick Murdock ( The Bat Squad ) - They appeared in Brave and Bold 92. The story was entertaining. And Nick's art really shines.
- Batman - Nick drew 5 issues of Brave and Bold and various B&B covers. And a bunch of Batman and Detective Comics covers.
MIDDLE
- Speedy
- Wonder Girl - The Teen Titans 23 cover is more famous. But the red costume ( designed by Nick ) first appeared in a backup story in Teen Titans 22. The original costume design had a lot of bells and whistles. And for whatever reason, even Nick stopped including them ( the black stars, beaded bracelet and necklace ). As noted by GP, in the New Teen Titans, he changed the costume to have a lower neckline.
- Tarzan - Nick briefly drew the Tarzan daily strip.
- Janu & Congo Bill - Nick drew the covers and most interiors for all 7 issues of Congo Bill.
- Bat Lash - Nick drew him starting with his first appearance in Showcase 76 and all 7 issues of Bat Lash.
- Daniel Boone - Nick drew the covers and most interiors for all 8 issues of Legends of Daniel Boone. The Pennsylvania long rifle is so linked with Boone that it was incorporated into the comics' logo.
- Black Canary - She appeared in the classic Brave and Bold 91. Actually, the Black Canary doesn't appear all that much in the issue. But Dinah Lance, BC's true identity ( hubba hubba ) is a big part of the story.
BOTTOM
- Kid Flash
- Aquagirl ( Tula ) - Nick drew her first appearance in Aquaman 33.
- Aqualad
- Mera - Nick drew her first appearance in Aquaman 11.
- Aquaman / Aquababy - Mera becomes pregnant and gives birth in Aquaman 23.
- Lilith Clay - Nick drew her first appearance in Teen Titans 25.
- Mal Duncan - Nick drew his first appearance in Teen Titans 26.
- Robin
- Flash - Nick drew a bunch of great Flash covers.
Honorable mentions:
- The witch from The Witching Hour - Nick drew a bunch of covers.
- Irving Nebbish, mascot for Crazy magazine - Nick drew a few covers.
I went through dozens of ways to organize the characters. In the end, I still messed up because I forgot that Daniel Boone is colored with that awful green, which unbalanced the greens. And I originally had Tula and Aqualad on the right side. Moving them unbalanced the reds.
