DescriptionBeautiful full page splash by Bernie Wrightson and Kevin Nowlan."Splash" is a story that was commissioned by Archie Goodwin in the 1990s to be published in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight. It was never published in the '90s and sat around in the DC offices until 2010 when it was finally released in "Batman: Hidden Treasures." Every page in this story is a full page splash with the text in the side margin. Beautiful book plate style splashes by Bernie Wrightson on large, oversized pages. Batman: Hidden Treasures (one shot) "Splash" - published December, 2010 Written by Ron Marz Penciled by Bernie Wrightson Inked by Kevin Nowlan From DC Wiki: The "Sewer Killer" has left six bodies strangled, dead, and in the sewers. When the Batman goes to the sewers to investigate, he finds Solomon Grundy and a fight ensues. But, is Grundy really the "Sewer Killer?" Social/Sharing |

Nowlan inking it is almost like Bernie had inked himself. Nowlan uses every technique Wrightson used to ink with and uses every one for effect. Wrightson's staging of this scene is pitch perfect for whatever text that was going beside it. Have Marz write it after he sees the drawing instead.

Completely agreed. The beautiful thing is that Marz wrote this story in a way that would allow Bernie to do full page illustrations almost like a children's picture book. No text on the book plates themselves.
The story is narrated around a camp fire and told as an urban legend style campfire story. A legend of Batman vs. Solomon Grundy.

I really agree with Marcus. Nowlan's inking is a great fit for Wrightson. Those bricks all look amazing and really showcase the figure work as well. Huge congrats!

I agree with all of you. Nowlan's inking on the pages for this story was sleek and clean and he paid careful attention to let Bernie's lines show through clearly. It almost seems sacrilegious to have anyone ink over Bernie, but Nowlan did it respectfully and allowed Bernie's art to shine. I'm super happy to also be able to see Bernie's original pencils on these pages.

This page is so well composed. Inking over Bernie must have been very intimidating. Nowlan's execution is spot-on.
Break out the marshmallows ;)

Finally, a penciller that Nowlan could not overpower. Kevin has been known to completely take over the identity of some of his pencillers. But not in this case. Whether or not this was in conscious reverence to the master, I don't know. It's just interesting to see Nowlan actually step aside and let Bernie's linework shine here. Stunning!

Love the image and scene. Really feels like you are in the sewer with Batman. Incredible artwork by some legendary artists
