Description

In 1986 Simon & Schuster wanted to launch a slightly more "mature" line of Nancy Drew books called The Nancy Drew Files and asked Drew Struzan to design covers for them. Struzan did cover proposals for the first three volumes. But in the end the publisher decided to go in another direction. (I'm guessing Drew's covers were TOO mature: in the published covers Nancy Drew definitely looks younger.) They had already started promoting the Struzan covers, however: Drew's covers for the first two books were featured in a promotional booklet that was handed out free at book stores.
This is the proposed cover for the second book in The Nancy Drew Files: The Deadly Intent.
The piece features Drew Struzan's trademark style of prismacolor pencil finishes over airbrushed acrylic.
Drew has signed this piece with the same "boxed" signature he used in the first Back to the Future poster.
And... I get childish joy from thinking that in this piece Drew drew Nancy Drew.
