Description
15" x 10" image area. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Batman: Gotham Knights #7 Page 6 original art (DC 2000). John Buscema.

Batman doing what he does best, outsmart the enemy. Here he's unarmed and fearless, up against a bunch of heavily armed thugs.

This Black and White 8 page story, crafted solely by the pencil and pen of one of the great masters of comic art, John Buscema, was his first work for DC after retiring from a long career with Marvel. It was also his one and only Batman work. Two years had barely gone by when John would develop stomach cancer and die at the age of 72.

A fabulously beautiful example of Big John's work. He never looked quite as good a when he inked himself, as that's when you really got to see pure Buscema. Wonderful!

Very true!!  While other artists inking of John's work might have looked smoother and lusher, the minute details that imparted action, true human individuality, and emotion in only the way John could do, was lost.  Here, there's no dilution or compromise.  It's John as John wanted it.  THAT is where you can really appreciate his talent.

John Buscema often did studies and prelims to work out these regular bad guy faces in pencil and ink for purposes such as this.  A showcase of them are on full display here.  They show a great range expressions and keep the action of the story moving.  The ones with the black backgrounds are fun to study.

This expertly rendered page plays out so well, it doesn't even need the dialogue.

Terrific page!  Love the mugs Buscema puts on his background characters and the action is so good

They're the thuggiest thugs I've seen in comics!  Trashy and raw.
