DescriptionJust look at those hands! You know what they say about men with big hands, right people? Big hands, even bigger visor!I must say, since the body is shown only from the waist up and he isn't firing his optic blasts, I'm glad Grummett at least gave it more life be drawing Cyke in an aggressive pose. As always, he took care to show the emotion through the hands as well as the face, something only the best draftsmen typically take the care to do. The anatomy is realistic and typically excellent. This is also one of my favourite Austin inked covers, as he did an excellent job all around. Do any of you see the Michael Golden (modern era, not early career) look of the finishes throughout the abdominal area? An unimportant but interesting observation. Before I started reading and collecting comics, my neighbour had given me a small pile of comics and one of them was a reprint of a Silver Age X-Men story. In the back after the story ended, there were a few pinups of the individual original X-Men members, I believe by Werner Roth, but my memory is vague. Anyway, I was mesmerized by the Cyclops pinup, probably because I was already a fan of the Cyclops of Greek myth by then. So once I began reading X-Men comics, I was already a Cyclops fan. The interesting thing is that I later grew to have more of a love/hate relationship with him because while I loved him as a standalone character, my gut instinct was always to side against him whenever he and Logan got into arguments. But visually, as simple as his costume was, I've always loved it. I'm more a fan of the original than this particular costume, but I still really like this one as well. I'm really thankful to own a solo cover of my favourite member of the original 5 X-Men, more so as it's done by one of my all-time favourite artists and inkers. Cyclops fans unite! EDIT: Okay, I've now discovered that the Cyclops pinup I referred to up above was not a pinup, but rather the splash page to the backup story in X-Men #43, which I now remember loving so much I read it over multiple times, as it explained the "secret" of Cyclops' optic blasts! I remember trying to draw this image of Cyclops and it was the first time I had ever attempted to copy a drawing, which led to me strong interest in the artistic aspect of telling stories with pictures within the comic book art form. The story even showed a panel of Cyclops firing his optic blast at The Hulk, who was my absolute favourite character then, which made me love Cyclops even more because the story led me to believe that a slim guy with no power other than the optic blasts could take on the "strongest one there is"! I've added a scan of the 5-page story in case any of you want to read it... Social/Sharing |

Probably my favorite of his costumes over the years. Really cool looking Cyclops, congrats.

The face and the hands are definitely where artists can show out in terms of expression, and Grummett definitely did that here. Being waist up, it's cool that you got a more close up shot, though not as close as a head shot, which is good. As far as the look/costume, main thing for me is having that classic hooded look with visor - love it. And yes, I'm a Cyke fan! Congrats!

Needs a thought bubble: "I'm so going to blast you .... no, no, no, don't it .... yes I'm so going to blast you!" :-)

Yup, nothing like "comic hands" (which is totally different from jazz hands, LOL). Love the exaggerated clutch. It's funny, the other day (I must have been really bored), I was just sitting around looking at my hand, and then I started tying to do some of these exaggerated hand poses from comics. I couldn't stop laughing, because it was just so ridiculous trying to hold your hand in some of these positions. Looks great in comics though. LOL

Nice, man! Everyone loves to hate on Cyclops, but he just wakes up every day to lead the team and fool around with the hottest X-Women! Respect!

What are your thoughts on the amalgamation of the 'skull cap' look with the Jim Lee Era body costume?

Great cover, Ruben. Did Austin ink much of Grummett's work?

I typically don't have the patience needed to sit through musicals, but there are exceptions to every rule, right? Along with The Wizard of Oz and Grease, The Sound of Music is one of only 3 musicals I can say I've always loved and have seen dozens of times. Excellent choice of song and an equally excellent cover version, my brother in music! Thanks, dude. 😀

more Grummett goodness. great cover of the x-man people love to hate. this must be in-between dating jean grey clones. He looks like he is pinching his right nipple. I never knew Scott liked some rough trade.

Now that's a Cyclops! Congrats on it being a Grummett as well. The ruby quartz visored mutant comic art stars have aligned :)

Poor Cyclops. It's not his fault that writers like to turn him into a jerk from time-to-time (I particularly disliked him during "Avengers vs. X-Men" and the years immediately preceding it). Cool cover here with the great expressiveness of the hands.

Indeed the work on his face and hands is fantastic.
Having Austin inking him also brings out the Byrne influence/similarity even if Terry provided looser inks here than during his early days. And I do see some modern Golden similarity in the abs and even in the other bold black areas (it would be interesting to check if Austin inked Golden on a jo during that time period).

When I first saw this, I thought "Wow, Cyclops must have a really itchy right pec." Then it seemed that the hand coming out of the left side of the image might not even BE Cyclops' hand. That someone might be reaching for him from off camera, causing his very expressive emotional response. Then I decided to stop trying to be funny and just say "Great cover, Ruben! Cyclops looks fantastic!"

Well, it is a big visor...Cyke showing off those Meaty Man Mitts! I always was a Cyke fan, too...but I have to admit I always rooted for Logan. Team Wolvie 4eva! ;) Grummett really does convey emotion with the whole body. Great point. And that inking by Austin is excellent, as he does. Another inch closer to cornering the Grummett market. Congrats!

Great intense cover of Cyclops, matches nicely to his level of leadership and all weight he has to continually carry for his team. Congrats!

Fantastic cover! Really different pose for Cyclops. Instead of showing him shooting off his eyebeams, Grummett depicts him tensing up as he prepares to blast the heck out of whoever has just pissed him off. Love how Terrry Austin's inks really bring the drawing to life. Congrats!
