Published September 2016. Subscription Variant.

I was very saddened to hear the news this afternoon of the passing of Nichelle Nichols. Nichelle originated the role of Lt. Uhura, one of the mainstays of the crew of the Enterprise in the original Star Trek television series and the six movies that it spawned. Most Star Trek fans are well aware of her importance, and there are many articles being posted today about her significance.

Star Trek has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a young kid, we would watch it on Saturday evenings on WPIX channel 11 here in New York, although it wasn't until my parents took us to see Star Trek III when I was seven that I really came to love it. I've watched every incarnation of Trek ever since, including the recent "Strange New Worlds" where actress Celia Rose Gooding has done a wonderful job portraying the character that Nichelle Nichols first brought to life.

As for this cover, I grabbed it the first time I saw it. As much as I love most of the various Trek series, you can't beat the crew that started it all, and Buckingham did a fantastic job capturing them here.

As mentioned above, Star Trek III was where I first fell in love with the franchise. Here's Ms. Nichols from that film.

Such a lovely homage to the original series, on a day a lot of fans will especially appreciate it.

For me, the original series is the only series.  And this is THE crew of the Staship Enterprise.  Great piece buddy!

Great cover, man, featuring the OG crew!  Really like the rendering on Spock's face.  Congrats, and timely post.  RIP Nichelle Nichols.

That is one beautiful cover!  Thank you for the lovely tribute to Nichelle.  That sad news really hit me hard today too.  I love the story of how Martin Luther King convinced her to stay on the original show when she wanted to move on after the first year.  Thank goodness he was so persuasive.

Agree 100%.  That original crew was pure magic.  It seriously depresses me that most of them are now gone, but so glad we can watch them at any time and experience the adventures all over again.

The original series was sci-fi of the future that was an allegory of the societal turmoil of the 1960's.  War, prejudice, environmentalism, nuclear threat, technology, and more created anxiety abut the future of humanity.  Star Trek had an optimistic tone and garnered acclaim, if not ratings at the time.  But with all things of high quality, it was timeless and would find a life beyond its initial run.   In the same way, Uhura and Nichelle Nichols' portrayal had a life of it's own as an lasting inspiration to all of us and for generations to come.

It truly is timeless.  I can't get my 8 year-old son to watch the recent MCU movies and shows or the most recent Star Wars stuff, but he'll watch a science fiction show from nearly half a century before he was born.  It gives me some small hope for the future!

I loved Nichelle Nichols as a kid, because she was a kick ass female on an otherwise all male crew. So sad to hear she's gone.  A fun piece of Star Trek art to post to her memory.

Beautiful cover!  I had no clue that Buckingham had done this, and it's fantastic to see how terrific it turned out...  Awesome.  And thank you for posting this on that day, at a time when we were all feeling loss.  In a world where every day it feels harder and harder to talk to each other, where more and more barriers seem to be erected between us all to keep us apart, the loss of anstrong and inspiring communications officer (fictional or no) weighs heavily.  R.I.P. Ms. Nichols.

Nice Cover, Mc! Always thought ST was such a trendsetter for all things SciFi. It broke the Desilu studios, but left such an imprint!
