DescriptionCGC SS 9.6 on a limited edition Lady Mechanika sketch cover (circa 2014).I gravitate to collecting works from artists that have a distinctive style. Chris' work is so distinct, he doesn't even have any imitators. Back then, Chris only worked in greyscale Copics. As much as I loved his art, his greyscale work on white paper always looked faded to me. Luckily, Joe Benitez had just released some tonal sketch covers that I felt would work well with the 'faded' look. To align with the theme of the comic, yet still involve a 'mainstream' character, I asked for a steampunk-style Black Widow. Other than asking him to throw in a splash of Scarlett Johansson and Black Queen, I let Chris have free reign to work his magic. The end result is a combination of creativity, attention to detail (see if you can spot the subtle spider design in her outfit), and use of lighting and shadows. Not everyday you get to see beautiful kick ass and haute couture in a sketch. Some have commented that they thought it was an actual printed comic cover. Happy 2023 everyone! Social/Sharing |

Steampunk style and redesign done by Stevens is amazing! He uses the textures so well like a b&w sepia photograph here.
