DescriptionI was thrilled to get on Gerhard's commission list about 9 months ago. He was delightful to work with and really funny. I was torn between doing something from Cerebus (of which there's many fine examples) and something unique that would mean something personally more than that series.Just before the pandemic in February & March of 2020, my wife and I traveled to India for my nephew's wedding. We spent a week with the family sight seeing and wound up for 3 days in a magical city called Orchha. It is out of the way but really remarkable and otherworldly. We stayed in an ancient palace that had converted a couple of rooms into a government-run hotel. It was exactly how I imagined staying in a palace. The views and the surrounding fortresses and temples, the religious chanting off the in the distance, the fields littered with old tiny temples, monkeys, and animals, added to the magic. Just Google "Orchha" for an idea of the beauty of this small town. I had never seen anything like it anywhere in the world, simultaneously being in an Indiana Jones film and a fantasy world out of a sci-fi story. The food, the people, the majestic, sturdy yet aged, glorious forts and temples were breathtaking. Gerhard sent a couple examples based on photos I sent and ones he found online. We settled on an image and I suggested adding some elements from another image he sent, namely the foreground and background contrast which I liked, so he added the temple in the distance. The pic of my wife and I was taken from a town we visited later called Bundi, but it worked well there. I have included the pencils as well to show the process, and a pic of me holding it to see the size. 18" x 24" Social/Sharing |

Handsome couple that Gerhard had to keep small for fear of outshining and overwhelming the scenery.
