Description
There is something perfect about this Eightball page. It captures much of what I wanted in a Clowes piece with respect to artistic style, layouts, characters and atmosphere with that palpable unease he creates so effortlessly.

It's old school cartooning if you just look at the layout and flawless execution.  The circle panel, the dark nighttime panel, the idylic beach environment.  It's when you get up close and read all the disturbing parts of human nature that causes the conflict in your mind with how beautifully it's drawn.

From the story 'Like a Weed, Joe' in the Caricature collection. Great pick up, Jeff! This is from my favorite period of his work -- what used to be the later mature phase, but I guess it's his "middle" period by now. Just brilliant.

I saw this for sale and craved it, but glad to see it wound up in your amazing collection, Jeff.  There is so much to appreciate in this page re content and style and the friction between them
