Description

Looking back over Michael Whelan’s career, there is a lot to absorb. While his colorful palette and grounded realism made him a fan favorite, his facility between genres might be the most under-appreciated aspect of his work. Whether fantasy or science fiction, horror or humor, he’s consistently hit the right notes.

Pairing him with Tanith Lee, a writer of equal facility between genres, provided a consistent spark of magic. Michael often praised the visual inspiration she provided on every page, and we see that here in a strangely tinted world that comes to life on the cover of The Days of Grass.

The frothy, vibrant water laps the sand, demanding immediate attention, but there’s a sense of unease in the way she turns to the audience. It’s difficult to ignore the horse skull, the book on the wet shore, or the way her hand clutches the sand. The pyramid jutting up from fractured rock is a wonderful contrast of textures. From the man perched on the rock to the massive spider creeping up the coast, the deeper you look the more there is to take in.
