Description--- Donald Duck's 90th anniversary (1934-2024) ---One of my all-time favorite Disney stories is "Sandopaper e la perla di Labuan", first published on Topolino (Mickey Mouse magazine) in 1976, a parody of Emilio Salgari's Sandokan novel "Le Tigri di Mompracem", written by Michele Gazzarri and illustrated by one of the greatest Italian Disney masters, Giovan Battista Carpi. Another story, "Le due tigri", followed years later. This is a cover prelim by Andrea Freccero for the Italian licensee Panini for a volume that reprints both of Carpi's Sandopaper stories. Andrea Freccero (one of Carpi's pupils, one of the very best Disney artists today, and also Topolino magazine's Art Director) is not at his first Sandopaper cover, but here he really summoned his inner Carpi and unleashed it on paper. So we got our favorite Malaysian pirate with a gun on his waist, brandishing a scimitar, and a tiger in the background. Can't imagine something more iconic than this. Plus, this was drawn on the Schoeller cardboard, so it was probably supposed to be inked here (but it wasn't), and there are a few bonus Sandopaper heads, one of which fully inked.
