Description

Hope everyone had a great New Year! I wanted to start the New Year off with a fun posting.

One of the best teams in the late 40's early 50s that raised the bar for illustrators is that of Williamson/Frazetta. They really complimented one another Williamson with his fluid work and the master craftsman Frazetta with his wonderful touches.

Many think of Frazetta as mostly fantasy artist (Conan, ray guns, space scenes, etc.), but I think a lot of his early work in westerns foreshadowed his imaginative work in Sci-Fi work, especially animals.

Animals are a touchpoint for artists they substantiate a work many times as part of a totem concept, to project what the illustrators want the reader to feel, power, wildness and natural violence.

This may be one of the best stories the duo created (my bias!) Right from the first panel we see the powerful imagery panther attack. In each of the next three panels the subjects are addressed in a smooth, but dynamic sequence splash.

Signed by Williamson (panel 1) and possibly Frazetta (top left next to "John Wayne")(?)

This kind of storytelling is what kept readers coming back!

Congratulations! I love this! I bid on this piece on Heritage, but I don't think that i was the underbidder, as it went for considerably more than my high bid. I love how the vultures in flight separate the panels, just an extceptional layout. I'm really happy to see this on CAF and in your wonderful gallery. These Frazetta/Williamson, early collaborations on the John Wayne comic are absolute gems.

I'm no expert on the matter but this is certainly a wonderful page by two absolute masters

More dynamic in illustration that stood out above the typical western faire, these panels are like little masterpieces that the prose has to follow rather than the other way around.

Great page!  Williamson's work from this period had a wonderful fluidity of movement and layout, and what needs to be said about Frazetta?  Even his signature was a work of art.
