Description

Illustration by Clark Ashton Smith. Signed "C.A.S." in lower right. Self-portrait titled "Clark Ashton Smith".

The note at the bottom was written by Samuel Loveman and reads "Clark Ashton Smith drawn by himself - SL".

Loveman tipped this into his copy of Smith's first book, The Star-Treader and Other Poems (1912), which Smith had sent him.

Clark Ashton Smith art, most likely done between 1915 and 1922. From the collection of Samuel Loveman, who showed Smith's art and poetry to H.P. Lovecraft in 1922. Soon after, Lovecraft wrote Smith what can only be described as a fan letter, kicking off a 15 year correspondence between the two that ended only with Lovecraft's death.
