Description
"Battle of Midway" by Paul S. Newman, cover date October-December 1963.

Catalina pilot finds and rescues his brother, a downed pilot.

Thank you for coming on this journey through history with the fictional Reed brothers and Sam's art.

This issue was among the DC, Dell, and Marvel war comics that sparked my interest in the genre.

Dell Combat cover stories were largely factual accounts of battles during the war, often without fictional main characters.

A particularly haunting issue is #7, "Action in the Sunda Strait," about the Japanese sinking of two cruisers.

The fictional narrator closes with words that could be from a Japanese narrator of the Midway story, if written from that perspective:

"Yes, it's too late for everything! That's exactly what war is! It's a clock that makes, all of it, too late!

It's too late for the living and it's too late for the dead. It's a nowhere clock and it only tells one kind of time!"

Really glad the brothers found their way back to each other, especially if it was based on a true story but either way it's a nice way to close out this complete story. Thanks for sharing it all, I enjoyed each page. Alsio issue 7 sounds like a banger - that monologue/narrator dialogue about war you mentioned is really poignant. Have you seen any art from it out there at all?

Thanks, Kavi. I'm glad you enjoyed the story! The brothers are fictional. I edited the description to clarify. I appreciate your comments about issue #7. Poignant - good word! That was the word I couldn't think of while writing the description. I took another look at #7 and only now notice that Sam edited sentences in word balloons by hand like he did in the Midway story, and that he does it more often. Funny how looking at an artist's original art brings out things you never noticed before in their comics. Have I seen any art from that issue? I saw a page in auction a number of years ago before I became absorbed in published art. A major war art collector has pages in his impressive CAF gallery.

The colors are great with the sun just at the horizon giving the skies different hues and signalling hope of a rescue.

The previous page had all the nice rendering and lighting techniques i nthe top 3 panels, and now this page has that in the bottom 3 panels! A fun, daily romp through the Battle of Midway. Congrats on owning the complete story, Peter, and thanks for sharing it with us!
