Day 2 - Carlyle’s Good Mark: One of the things that has always fascinated me about The Phantom mythology is the meaning behind his two rings — symbols that carry completely opposite messages. The ring worn on the Phantom’s right hand leaves the infamous Skull Mark when delivered with a punch — a warning to evil-doers that they’ve crossed paths with “The Ghost Who Walks.” But less known, and far rarer within the stories, is the ring worn on his left hand: the Good Mark. This mark is given gently to those the Phantom trusts and protects, symbolizing lifelong protection. This incredible Wilson McCoy daily beautifully explains both symbols in a single strip, and honestly, I think it’s one of the most visually appealing and aesthetically perfect Phantom dailies I’ve ever seen. The final glowing Good Mark panel makes it glow and really stand out, with the careful touches showing McCoy’s brilliant skill of capturing mystery and depth in his art. Like the first daily I shared yesterday, this original artwork came from the Lee Falk estate, acquired during my very first trip to the USA in December 2013.
